POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Recreation Therapist provides recreation programs including music, art/crafts, social activities and trips in accordance with the individual's needs, capacities and interests. The objective of such programs is to effect improvement in the individuals' physical, mental and social well-being.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Provide recreation programs for individuals and groups of individuals, recommend services, activities and programs, and stimulate and maintain participant interest in appropriate recreation activities. In accordance with treatment plans and individuals' interest and needs, the recreation therapist conducts recreation activities; reviews and evaluates program effectiveness for the individuals served; and recommends program changes or specialized activities as required. Plans leisure activities, community experiences, camp, vacations, and special/holiday events to developmentally-disabled individuals in an IRA setting. Plan, develop, and implement recreation activities and programs, including, but not limited to sports, exercise, dance, drama, music, art, and social activities. Assist with developing and implementing agency programs for self-advocacy. Ensure documentation of recreation activities and community inclusion. Maintain recreation areas and supplies. Ability to adjust work schedule to meet the program and organizational needs. Possess a valid New York State Driver's License. Complete other duties as assigned.

Salary Range:
From $49202 to $62806 Annually
Minimum Qualification
o Currently serving as a Recreation Therapist and eligible for transfer; OR o Reachable on the Civil Service List for Recreation Therapist; OR o One year in a permanent title eligible for 70.1 transfer per Civil Service Rules and Regulations. The minimum qualifications for a Recreation Therapist are:
I. a bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation; OR II. a bachelor's degree in Recreation, Physical Education, or Adaptive Physical Education AND one year of experience in planning and administering a therapeutic recreation program
which involved developing and coordinating therapeutic recreational activities for geriatric patients/residents, individuals with developmental disabilities, individuals with psychiatric disabilities, individuals that are physically challenged, or individuals in treatment for chemical dependency; OR III. current credentials as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) issued by the National Council For Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), 7 Elmwood Drive, New City, NY 10956.
